To be honest studying has never really been my thing, I never had the patience for it if I could learn on the job. I preferred getting my hands dirty and getting stuck in instead of reading about whatever it was I was supposed to be learning.
It wasn’t that I was bad at it - when I applied myself or really loved the subject matter I was a straight A student - I was just so much more a human ‘doing’ than a human ‘being’. Blame my over exuberant youthful energy! Wouldn’t mind some of that back, let’s be honest. While I’m always up insanely early, by the time I get Lily to bed at 8pm I’m ready to fall in beside her myself.
Now that I’m older, (wiser?), done so much doing, got married, had a kid and calmed down a bit, an interest in studying has sparked in me for the first time in a long time. I already have 3 successful businesses and became financially free a few years ago but I’m at a point where I need a challenge, to learn something new and stretch my brain a bit.
Obviously when you’re a busy mum working mostly from home when you’re in between traveling the world, regular classes are not an option, unless I want to give up so much of my lifestyle and make a lot of sacrifices. And even though I’m a little more patient than I was 10 years ago, I’m still not going to drag myself through three years of study! The very thought makes me cringe all over.
So I’ve been looking at options with Massey University as they have some great distance learning courses. I can do it at my own pace from anywhere in the world i.e. from the beach or the pool or even snuggled up in bed, which are the usual places I like to do my work. Or I can hang out at a cafe with one of my besties to work away at our projects together so we can throw ideas around and drink green juice together!
There’s also an element of safety for me. I get a lot of social anxiety which can be quite crippling when I’m not in the right headspace, and I always found classrooms a bit intense. Something I thought would go away when I grew up but didn’t - or maybe I just never grew up! So it’s a relief to not have to go through that again.
So now, it’s just the decision of which course to take up! There’s so many to choose from on the Distance Learning Massey University that it might take me a while to figure out which one I will enjoy the most and will add value to what I’m currently doing.

If you’ve already done distance learning ’d love to hear what you studied and how your experience was in the comments below!
