I love snacking. I LOVE IT. I would quite happily never eat proper meals, and just snack all day long. My friends will make fun of me sometimes because no matter how much or little I eat, I need to eat again 2 hours later. Eating frequently keeps your blood sugars stable and energy up, but of course it’s important to choose what you nibble on wisely.
My number 1 tip – always pack your snacks! Put some in your car, in your desk, and anywhere else you spend a lot of time. You don’t want to be caught out starving and find yourself in front of the caramel slice or chocolate bars fighting the yes no yes no yes no in your head – who do you find usually wins that argument when you’re hangry? If I’m being honest I would have to say the Kettle Fries win over self control almost every time, because when I’m hungry I make crappy decisions. As the saying goes, ‘if you fail to prepare, then you prepare to fail.’
So what are the best choices?
Fruit is one of my favorite snacks. As I always say, fruit is LIFE! It’s so fresh and full of nutrients, and in my opinion nothing is more delicious. I generally keep some bananas, strawberries, apples pears dates & mandarins on hand depending on what is in season (or what was cheap at the markets that week). I do try to eat all my fruit earlier in the day though, because it digests so quickly. I don’t want it sitting on top of heavier food & fermenting – which then causes bloating and discomfort, which nobody wants. So my afternoon snacks have to come in a different form.
Hummus and veggie sticks are another awesome snack that will keep you going and give you energy, without the slump you’ll get if you resort to coffee or chocolate biscuits. Either make your own or try to find a brand that doesn’t have a lot of additives, preservatives or unhealthy vegetable oils in it. You can find my oil free hummus recipe here
Another great snack is the Nibblish range. They come in individual portion sizes which helps to prevent overeating, not that you really want to because they’re pretty filling. It’s a delivery service, they send you out a new pack each week – which is super convenient, and a saviour when you’re too busy to get to the supermarket!
There are about 40 options, which you can go through on their website (nibblish.co.nz) and rate according to what you like and don’t like. About 75% of them are vegan which is more than enough variety to keep me from getting bored. My favorite so far is the Tasty Thai cashews and the Lemon & Herb olives, so so good.
Your first order is half price at only $5, or you can use this discount code RC-85-184 then it will be only $3.50 including postage (Click here to sign up for your first delivery if you want to try them out).
Wholegrain rice thins or a small piece of wholegrain bread (I like rye sourdough) with avocado tomato and black pepper is always a winner, I never get sick of that oh so simple combination!
